Family history research

Many people wish to find out more about their family history and, very often, a really good place to start is with the information contained in church registers. If you are searching for details about a marriage, a baptism or a burial associated with Hertford St Andrew, then the information on this page should help.

If the date you are researching falls within the Register records kept by us at the church, please contact the Parish Office. If the date you are researching falls within the Register records kept elsewhere, please contact the relevant place. All contact information can be found below.

Baptism Registers

  • The church currently holds the Baptism Registers from 14 October 1987 to date.
  • These are ordered according to the date of baptism (not the date of birth) but also record date of birth, parents and Godparents and address.
  • All earlier Registers have been lodged with the Diocesan Record Office.
  • The Diocesan Record Office also holds a separate register of baptisms which took place at Hertford County Hospital.

  • The church currently holds the Burial Register from 7 January 1935 to date.
  • This is ordered according to the date of burial (not the date of death) and in most cases will also record an address and age at death but not the date of death
  • St Andrew’s churchyard was closed in the 1850s and, therefore, no burials in the churchyard are recorded in the current Register.
  • The church holds a record of monuments in the churchyard.
  • The Burial Register records burials of bodies in the St Andrew’s Cemetery in North Road. This Cemetery was transferred to Hertford Borough Council (now Hertford Town Council) in 1944 and few burials of bodies have taken place there since then. Records of the much larger Borough Cemetery in North Road/ Bramfield Road, which is still open, are held by the Town Council.
  • The Burial Register records burials of ashes in the churchyard and in existing family graves in St Andrew’s Cemetery to date.
  • The church holds a record by name of people buried in St Andrew’s Cemetery, in most cases with plot numbers, but there is not, for most of the Cemetery, any plan linking them with an area on the ground. Nor does the Town Council have a plot map for the St Andrew’s Cemetery. However, Cemetery staff are often able to identify monuments.
  • There is, in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at St Andrew's, a Book of Remembrance with the names of people whose ashes are buried in the churchyard. This is organised as a calendar, according to the date of death. There is also a file in the Chapel listing names alphabetically and this can be viewed by visitors.
  • All earlier Burial Registers have been lodged with the Diocesan Record Office.
